Diving in Panama City
Known as the "wreck capital of the South," Panama City Beach offers an incredible area for divers to explore. With clear emerald waters, brilliant Florida sunshine and a myriad of natural, historical, and artificial reefs, the area surrounding Panama City Beach provides the ideal environment for underwater exploration and excitement.
Exploring the underwater world of Panama City Beach provides thrills for all. Discover the historic wrecks found scattered throughout the area including the Chippewa, Chickasaw, and the Grey Ghost tugboats, the coastal freighter the S.S. Tarpon, a World War II era liberty ship, and the jewel of the Gulf of Mexico, the 465-foot Empire Mica.
Immersed in the clear gulf water you can swim with giant manta rays, octopus, puffer fish, horseshoe crabs, blue marlin, and even sea turtles. 50 artificial reefs have been developed off Panama City Beach as part of a community project with the Panama City Marine Institute. There are natural reefs as well, simply a few miles offshore. Offering the perfect spot for viewing a wealth of underwater creatures including small corals and vibrant sponges, these reefs allow for terrific opportunities to explore and take in the wonders of the undersea world of Panama City Beach. The ideal time for Panama City Beach diving is April through September. There are several dive shops in the area that can accommodate the needs of visitors.
